Is there anything too hard for God? This is a question that God himself asks of Abraham and Sara. Maybe you did not ask the question but made an assumption in another way. It might look like “God this is too hard for even you”. Abraham is visited by three travelers who have come to fulfil a promise made years before by God to Abraham. Sara who is old and not realizing who the travelers are thinks to herself there is no way this promise to have a baby is coming now. That is when the one of the travelers described as “The Lord” asks the question. Is there anything too hard for the Lord?

Is anything too hard for the Lord? At the appointed time I will return to you, about this time next year, and Sarah shall have a son.” Genesis 18:14 ESV

Nothing is too Wonderous

When we hear the question and we understand who God is then the answer will always be “No” there is nothing too difficult for the Lord. But I want you dear reader to pause and think about the question and the intent of the Lord when he asked the question. The word the Lord used here in this question translates to “hard” but that does not give us the full idea of the question. The Hebrew word פָּלָא (pala) means wonderous, marvelous, performing something difficult. So let us rephrase the question into the context of the situation. Is anything too hard or marvelous for God? No the Lord is marvelous and he does marvelous things.

who does great things beyond searching out, and marvelous things beyond number. Job 9:10 ESV

Control over Death

What situation are you in? Is this mess so much that God can’t do something marvelous? Dear reader you and I both know they answer. The Lord can do something marvelous. God has the power to change the course of life and death itself. There is a famous example of one of the many “signs and wonders” that Jesus performed in public where he brings Lazarus back from the dead. Jesus calls for Lazarus to come out of the grave and many people started to believe in the answer to the question “Is there anything too hard for God”.

Many of the Jews therefore, who had come with Mary and had seen what he did, believed in him, 46 but some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done. 47 So the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered the council and said, “What are we to do? For this man performs many signs. 48 If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation.” John 11:46-48 ESV

Waiting for Your Benefit

What is too hard and marvelous for the Lord to do in your life? Anything God wants to do he can make it happen. Not only that but in the situation of Lazarus Jesus actually waited until Lazarus had been dead for 3 days before the marvelous event. Sara laughed at the travelers because she was old and she had never had children. So now at this stage in her life she is going to have a son? Yes because God wanted to do something marvelous. It is not simply that difficulties need to be overcome but God wants to demonstrate his marvelous power so that we can have faith in him.

Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it. 2 For since the message declared by angels proved to be reliable, and every transgression or disobedience received a just retribution, 3 how shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation? It was declared at first by the Lord, and it was attested to us by those who heard, 4 while God also bore witness by signs and wonders and various miracles and by gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will. Hebrews 2:1-4 ESV

Salvation is Marvelous

The most marvelous thing God has ever done is death on the cross to save humanity. My salvation at the sacrifice of Christ is something that should have been too hard for God. But God a marvelous wonder working God made me alive through the death of his only son. Don’t miss this marvelous salvation and don’t overlook the amazing nature of his gift to you.
